Tina Frey

Sculptural resin and ceramics, handmade in San Francisco.

Tina Frey

Meet the Maker

Tina Frey spent more than a decade in Silicon Valley finance before walking away to make things by hand. Today her San Francisco studio has a quiet cult following for sculptural ceramic and resin homewares: organic, tactile, and unmistakably human.

Every object starts as a form Frey shapes in the studio, drawn from the contours of nature and the things she notices while traveling. A master mold-maker builds each mold by hand. Pieces are then cast in small batches, usually in resin, and sanded and polished one at a time. She calls the result perfectly imperfect, and it is the whole point.

The work now turns up in five-star resorts and Michelin dining rooms, but it was always meant for a real table. Vases, bowls, serving pieces with subtle variations from one to the next, the kind you only notice once you live with them.

"A perfectly imperfect object, created with heart and by hand, speaks more to me than a perfectly perfect object." — Tina Frey
